Last week, our classroom turned into a mini science lab! Our students had so much fun making homemade playdough while practicing English and learning about states of matter.
We started by talking about the ingredients in English: flour, salt, oil, water, and food coloring.
Then, we discussed: - Which ingredients are solids? - Which ones are liquids?
The students loved observing how, when mixed together, these simple ingredients changed their texture and became something new: squishy playdough! This was a perfect hands-on way to explore science vocabulary while having fun.
Key Vocabulary (Glossary):
Flour = Farinha
Salt = Sal
Oil = Óleo
Water = Água
Food coloring = Corante alimentício
Solid = Sólido
Liquid = Líquido
Mix = Misturar
Squishy = Macio / Maleável
Learning goals:
Practice English vocabulary
Explore the difference between solids and liquids
Encourage creativity and sensory play
Learn by doing! Hands on!
Creative Art Lesson:
After making the playdough, we turned the activity into an Art class!
Students used their homemade playdough to model different objects, like: Flowers, Animals,Food items, Mini planets.
While modeling, they practiced describing their creations in English, using sentences like:
"I made a turtle."
"This is my pink flower."
"My playdough is blue and soft."
It was a great way to combine language learning, fine motor skills, and creative expression!

How to Make Homemade Playdough (Recipe):
Here’s the simple recipe we used in class:
Ingredients:
2 cups of flour
1 cup of salt
2 tablespoons of oil (vegetable oil works great)
About 1 cup of water (add slowly until you reach the right consistency)
A few drops of food coloring (optional – choose your favorite color!)
Instructions:
In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt together.
Add the oil.
Slowly pour in the water, mixing continuously.
Add a few drops of food coloring and mix until the color is even.
Knead the dough with your hands until it’s soft and smooth.
If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour. If it’s too dry, add a little more water.
Now it’s ready to play!
